Energy bids while small caps and industrials drag the tape lower

Broad selling hit the tape today with small caps and industrials taking the heaviest damage. Tech managed to finish flat, but energy was the only clean long in an otherwise defensive session.

The tape

Sellers controlled the session. SPY closed down 0.46% to 762.40. QQQ shed 0.26% to 716.51. The Dow dropped 0.75% to 524.07. The real damage was in small caps. IWM led the move lower, falling 1.37% to 290.64.

Breadth was terrible. Ten out of eleven sectors closed red or flat. When the market sells off and only energy catches a bid, you are looking at a classic defensive rotation.

What moved

XLE +0.83%. Energy was the only sector to print green. Capital moved into the complex early and stayed there into the close.

XLK 0%. Tech finished exactly flat. In a tape this heavy, flat is outperformance. It absorbed the selling while the rest of the board bled.

XLI -1.51% and XLY -1.34%. Industrials and discretionary took the worst of it. The cyclical trade was aggressively unwound today.

Crypto equities were heavy. MSTR fell 2.51% to 133.10. COIN dropped 2.31% to 174.80. The desk's spot crypto feed went dark today, so we had no live pricing on bitcoin or ether, but the proxy equities told us exactly which way the flows were moving.

In the micro-cap space, it was the usual disconnected casino. YMAT gained 75.8% to 2.33. SUNE added 64.1% to 3.89. On the downside, MGN was obliterated, losing 93.4% to close at 0.26. We ignore this action. It has zero bearing on the broader tape.

What drove it

Pure risk-off rotation. Market participants sold growth-sensitive cyclicals and small caps. They parked cash in energy and hid in tech. The lack of fresh macro data meant the tape traded entirely on technicals and positioning. Sellers stepped in, and buyers refused to step up.

What we expect next

We are flying blind on the macro calendar right now. That means we trade the price action in front of us, nothing else. The trend is heavy. IWM is technically damaged after today's flush.

We are watching tech. XLK held the line today. If that breaks, the broader indices will accelerate lower. If SPY cannot reclaim the losses above 762 quickly tomorrow, the path of least resistance remains down. Watch XLE for continuation of the defensive rotation.

The bottom line

The tape is defensive. Cyclicals are bleeding out. Capital is either hiding in tech or buying energy. The setup requires patience. Size down, respect the downside momentum, and wait for the tape to prove it can hold a bid before getting aggressive on the long side.
