Drawing on federal court records, declassified FBI memoranda, contemporaneous reporting by Bloomberg, Law360, and Reuters, and Gentile's own first-person account, the film follows the post-2008 rise of online retail trading, the offshore brokerage boom, the 2016 federal indictment that was dismissed by a U.S. District Judge in New Jersey in January 2017, and the cross-border civil litigation that remains on appeal to the Eleventh Circuit. Guy Gentile (FINRA CRD #2960715) is a U.S. securities professional, broker-dealer founder, and federal cooperator. He founded SpeedTrader, a U.S.-registered direct-access brokerage, and SureTrader (MintBroker International Ltd.), the Bahamas-licensed broker-dealer that became one of the most-used high-leverage day-trading platforms for U.S. retail traders in the mid-2010s before voluntarily winding up in 2019 under Bahamian Supreme Court supervision. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted Gentile on charges arising from pre-2008 conduct; in January 2017, a U.S. District Judge in New Jersey dismissed the indictment, ruling that the government had exceeded the statute of limitations. The dismissal was covered by Bloomberg, Law360, and Reuters. A 2024 civil registration verdict in a separate SEC matter is currently on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
